Summary of proposal

The request sought information on how the funding from the following Budget measures has been used since announcement, and how it is planned to be used across the forward estimates:

  • Maintaining Support for an Effective Foreign Service, Budget 2024-25
  • Maintaining Support for an Effective Foreign Service, Budget 2023-24.

Foreign investment

Summary of proposal

This proposal would abolish foreign investment restrictions through the repeal of the Foreign Acquisitions and Takeovers Act 1975 and the defunding of the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB).

This proposal would have effect from 1 July 2017.

Summary of proposal

The proposal would abolish all foreign aid payments except for short term humanitarian relief following natural disasters. 

The proposal would also withdraw Australia's membership and cease capital contributions and funding to the: 

  • Asian Development Bank (ADB)
  • Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB)
  • European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRO)
  • World Bank Group (WBG)
  • International Monetary Fund (IMF).

This proposal would have effect from 1 July 2017.

Human Rights and Increase Foreign Aid (ECR564)

Summary of proposal

The proposal would increase Official Development Assistance (ODA) funding for developing nations annually from 1 July 2022 on a linear trajectory in order to reach 0.7% of Gross National Income (GNI) by 2029-30. $250 million of this increased funding would go towards the COVAX initiative.

This proposal would have effect from 1 July 2022.
